Two Special Doug Scott Lectures

This autumn, Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake is working with Doug Scott’s charity Community Action Nepal, to host two very special lectures. Doug will take to the podium, along with leading mountaineers across the generations to celebrate two remarkable mountaineering milestones. All proceeds made from the lecture will go, to build a much needed Porter Rescue Shelter in the remote Himalayan region of Machermo.

We hope you will come along, both to enjoy the evening, but also to support us in raising funds for the Machermo Porter Rescue Shelter.

Sunday 5th September at 7.30pm.

Everest: The Hard Way – With Sir Chris Bonington, Paul ‘Tut’ Braithwaite and Doug Scott

This September is the 35th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest’s South West Face – Everest: The Hard Way. In a unique event, key players on this climb will join together to tell their story. The expedition was organised and led by Chris, while Tut along with Nick Escourt, climbed the ‘crux’ of the route, when they overcame the key pitches on the notorious Rock Band and Doug, along with Dougal Haston became the first to reach the summit by this route and the survived the highest bivouac ever made without bottled oxygen or sleeping bags. This is THE mountaineering lecture of the year.

Sunday 28th September at 7.30pm.

Big Wall Climbing around the World – Doug Scott and Leo Houlding

Although best known for his first ascent of Everest’s South West Face, Doug Scott was also one of the leading pioneers of Big Wall Climbing in the 1960s and 70s. With major climbs on many of the world’s most challenging faces – including early ascents on El Cap, The Troll Wall and Mount Asgard – he was partnered by many of the leading climbers of his generation.

Leo Houlding has taken up the challenge of Big Wall Climbing for a new generation, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the extreme environment of mile high, vertical rock. In 2009 he took on The Asgard Project, when he both eliminated aid to free climb much of Asgard’s massive north face, but then returned to the valley with a spectacular BASE Jump.

Each generation climbs on the shoulders of their predecessors – developing new techniques and approaches as they go – but the commitment to really push limits is only ever embraced by a few. Doug and Leo have been at the forefront of what is possible and they come together, both to compare and contrast the developments within Big Wall climbing, but also to celebrate adventure and in its purest form. This is THE climbing lecture of the year.
