Alpine Club Meets

The Alpine Club is a national club and has members dispersed all over the country and the world. The Meets programme provides great opportunities for fellow members to get to know each other in the climbing areas of the UK and the mountains of the world. UK meets in particular offer the chance for members to drop in, even for just an evening drink, although if attending a dinner it is important to let the co-ordinator know in order to cater for the correct number. Sometimes there are after-dinner speakers and again members are welcome to just turn up for the talk. New members have often attended meets as guests of members before they joined and their presence on meets is particularly welcome both to widen their circle of acquaintance and to assist with maintaining that tradition of openness to prospective members. Non-members may attend meets as guests of members at the discretion of the meet co-ordinator. A 'co-ordinator' is designated for each AC meet.

A general guide to the operation of AC meets is given in the General Meets Guide, and specific guidelines for Meets co-ordinators in Guidelines for Meet Co-ordinators & Expedition Leaders.

Transport and accommodation arrangements and options may be facilitated by the meet co-ordinator although members are always free to book their own and just participate in the activities of the meet on a day to day basis.   There are no application forms for UK Meets but for all others please download APPLICATION FORMS . They should be returned with any deposit required to meet co-ordinators as an email attachment or by post .

23rd June to 2nd July 2011 Elbrus on Ski - Caucasus Prequel or freestanding ski ascent of Mount Elbrus.
Attempts on Mount Elbrus (5600m) around Easter usually turn into a long crampon plod up bullet-proof ice instead of a fine ski although some excellent touring in the main Caucasus range often compensates. In the second part of June ski conditions on Elbrus should be perfect for ski descent from the top. This year it was in great condition at the end of June. The Bezingi meet has already attracted members and some may wish to gain some earlier acclimatisation for the later technical climbing whilst others may just fancy a 3000m ski descent without continuing to Bezingi. The 30 day limit on Russian visas fixes the dates but 10 days should be adequate to acclimatise sufficiently to make the ascent of Elbrus, particularly if members have done some alpine touring earlier in the season.
NB. The Russian Caucasus has none of the problems with lawlessness encountered by previous AC meets in Georgia although the food is nothing like as good!
Co-ordinator Dave Wynne-Jones.  tel 0117 3771992 Further Details

2nd -24th July 2011 - Russian Caucasus
A three week Alpine Club expedition to the Russian Caucasus is currently being planned. We shall to fly via Moscow to Mineralnyje Vody and from there go by road to the Bezingi Valley where we shall be based at the Russian camp. This camp provides easy access to the Bezingi Basin which offers superb mountaineering opportunities in an impressive alpine environment on peaks rising to 5200m. Shkhara, Jangi-tau, Gestola and Dych-tau are just some of the well-known peaks accessible from the Bezingi Basin and Friedrich Bender's Classic Climbs in the Caucasus illustrates these and many others. Please contact Derek Buckle (01737 763482) if you are interested in joining this meet. Further Details

27th August to 10th September.  Joint AC/ ABMSAC /CC/FRCC Dolomites Meet
Camping Dolomiti, Cortina.
The Dolomites Meet will be returning to Cortina in 2011 partly because the 2010 Meet was cut short owing to bad weather and partly because the Dolomiti campsite is an excellent base..   The Cortina area has a huge amount to offer both in terms of the volume and variety of the rock climbing not to mention the vie ferrate and scenic high level walking. It is also well positioned for access to nearby areas in case anyone feels they've 'climbed out' the immediate Cortina area. Transport links from Treviso airport are also quite good. The Dolomiti Campsite is to the south of Cortina, sign posted from the main road with a local bus service as well. It is the nicest of the three campsites grouped outside Cortina with flat grassy pitches, excellent showers, inclusive hot water and laundry facilities, a small shop, a pleasant bar, access to covered areas and superb views.
